Texas Man Recovers from NASCAR Debris Injuries

From Denton County, a North Texas man has been recovering from injuries that he sustained at the Daytona International Speedway and is expected to soon be released from a Florida hospital.

Krum resident Eddie Huckaby, 53, was attending a recent nationwide NASCAR series event when debris from a car crash on the track came flying over the track’s fence and into the stands that Huckaby was watching the race from.

There were about 30 people injured from the debris and some were rushed to area hospitals.

Huckaby suffered a major cut to his leg according to his brother Terry Huckaby.

Terry said, “You gotta realize a wheel – and I’m not talking about a tire, but an entire wheel with a rim and everything – flying over your head.”

The brothers were at the race together, sitting about ten rows up in the stands.

Eddie Gossage, who runs the Texas Motor Speedway said that the facility’s fence is built much better than the fence that they have in Daytona.

“You see things happen that are really hard to swallow when it involves crew members, but when it involves fans it’s something we just can’t accept,” Gossage said.

NASCAR officials have been reviewing what happened in Florida. Speedway officials also offered to relocate any fans attending the following Daytona 500 race who were concerned about their seating arrangements.
